Catalog \ Medical Conditions \ Antibacterials

Antibacterials are simply botanicals that inhibit growth or reproduction of bacteria. Some antibacterials directly kill bacteria. While there are many bacteria that are critical for normal function of the body such as those in the small intestine, which are essential for proper digestion, there are many more pathogenic bacteria. These pathogenic bacteria can enter the body in many different ways (via the mouth, nose, skin) and ultimately can cause infections leading to potentially serious health problems. Antibacterials can be used internally or externally and it is often important to be sure the botanical comes in contact with the infection. Therefore, it is critical to apply a botanical directly to the site of infection. Some common bacterial infections are sinus infections, lung infections, bladder infections, boils, and any pus filled infection. Some antibacterials have an affinity for certain parts of the body such as the lungs, bladder, intestines, etc. Be sure when choosing a botanical to read the information available to be sure you are making the best choice available to you.

Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, where a massive search of the world’s herbal literature was initiated for plants used against jaundice (acute hepatitis) and other liver diseases. Phyllanthus turned up as one of the most promising for follow-up. The hope for Phyllanthus is to provide an abundantly available nontoxic alternative not only to treat the disease, but ideally to render carriers sero-negative for the virus so they won’t pass it on to others. Combined with vaccines, Phyllanthus, or perhaps other herbs combined, might make a significant contribution to the eradication of viral hepatitis (see studies).
